There are a lot of advantages you get from having a tent with a stove jack and this page may not be enough to tell them all to you. But having a tent that offers you the ability to keep you warm and help cook food is priceless. Stove jacks are like chimney openings inside your tent. So inside your tent, when you have a tent stove, there should also be an exhaust pipe connected to the stove to direct the smoke outside. And to install an exhaust pipe, an opening on your tent is necessary. And this opening is called the stove jack.

How Stove Jacks Work

For some people who never go camping and use tents, the name stove jacks is unfamiliar. But for campers, backpackers, and outdoor enthusiasts, these simple tent accessories are a critical part of every tent with a tent stove. Moreover, tent stoves are only advised for use on canvas tents.

canvas tent with stove jackA stove jack is a basic opening on a tent either on the wall or on the roof so that a pipe from the tent stove can be installed to serve as the smoke exhaust. So imagine a tent without a stove jack and you light your tent stove to warm  up after a day’s fishing, the smoke and fumes from it will naturally get trapped inside the tent. So if this sounds hazardous to you, the stove jack will provide the solution to keep your tents air clean and vent the smoke to the outside of your tent.

Stove jacks can be created for canvas tents by cutting an opening in the tent and installing a pipe of the same size with the tent stove’s pipe and gluing up or stitching a fireproof flap to serve as cover for the hole. There are also pre-made stove jacks that you can buy and are made of fiberglass silicone fabric that are waterproof and fireproof and with Velcro attachments.

But if you want to buy a canvas tent with a stove jack, you have a lot of options. There is the canvas winter tent with stove jack, a dome tent with stove jack, and a lightweight tent with stove jack. Stove tents can warm tents pretty quickly depending on their size. But preferably, the tent stoves should be used only inside large canvas tents that can accommodate several people.

How to Install a Stove Jack?

Canvas tents are the preferred type of tents for installing stove tents although cotton doesn’t catch fire easily it is not fireproof. They can also withstand extreme changes in temperatures and are resilient against water leaks and they are fire resistant. Unlike polyester and nylon tents that can catch fire easily and are vulnerable to weather changes, canvas tents are best for installing stove jacks.

But how to install a stove jack can be another problem if your canvas tent doesn’t already have one and you want to spend the nights outdoors. Then you need to learn the installation process.

Things you need for DIY Stove Jack installation:

Good quality canvas tent
Sharp pointed knife
Pencil or a pen
Small adjustable wrench
Tent stove with a flue pipe system
Modular stove jack that comes with 2 or 3 flue pipes

If your tent stove is brand new, season it first by firing it up for about 3 to 4 hours outside the tent. This is to let the chemicals or oils from the manufacturing process get burned off.

While seasoning the stove, decide where you want to place your stove inside the canvas tent. There are two things you could consider when positioning the stove inside the tent.

If you place the stove close to the center of the tent, this can provide maximum heat to everybody as the heat transfer can be faster and this is ideal if you’re staying in a very cold environment. However, the stove can take up some of the  living space unless you’re using a huge canvas tent.

Positioning the stove on the sidewall will offer you a wider center space and can make it easy for you when refueling the stove. For a not so cold environment, sidewall is preferred for an even heat dispersion.

Once the tent stove is in the position, fit the flue pipe first into the tent stove’s pipe to see if it has a good fit. Then fit the flue pipe into the hole of the modular stove jack. If the flue pipe won’t fit into the module’s hole, cut out about an inch from the edge of the rubber until the flue pipe has a good fit.

Take one flue pipe and bring it up onto the canvas and mark its edges with a pen on the canvas.  Disengage the metal ring from the modular stove jack and bring it up to where the circle mark is and center up the hole. Mark the screw holes on the metal ring with the pen and poke them using the point of the knife. These holes are for the screws.   Go outside the tent and position the modular stove jack and insert the screws on its holes. Go back inside the tent, take the metal ring and insert in its holes the protruding screws. Then install the nuts on the screws and tighten them up with a small adjustable wrench.

Now that you have installed the modular stove jack inside and out, cut out the canvas fabric that’s inside the hole of the modular stove pipe using the knife then install the flue pipe. You can now connect the flue pipe onto the tent stove’s pipe. Add more flue pipe until it extends outside the tent a few feet.

Light up the stove and check if there’s no smoke leak with the pipe. Refit the flue pipes as necessary.

How Winter Tent With Stove Jack Can Save Your Life In Winter

One of the most challenging and exhilarating trips we can do during winter is camping in the mountains. Mountains covered with snow become majestic with sparkling white snow. You can enjoy your time skiing and playing in the snow with your companions. And usually, the most memorable times of life are camping and having fun with your family and friends.

However, at the end of the day, we still need to rest and stay warm. An advantage would be to have a canvas tent with stove jack and of course a tent stove. A tent with a stove jack allows you to warm your tent and keep you warm while avoiding hypothermia even if the temperature dips below freezing. That’s why it’s good to have a winter tent with a stove jack because it is specially made for extreme cold weather.

When it comes to choosing the best winter tent with a stove, it is not only the stove jack that is important to consider but also the tent. The tent should have  thick canvas to provide more insulation as well as protection from water leakage. To know the density or fabric quality of the canvas tent, you should check the Denier rating of the tent and it should have not less than 2000 mm HH (thickness or density) and have a 70D rating (size of the woven threads) for the Denier.

Insulation capacity, number of openings, and the size of the tent should also be important factors in choosing a tent with stove jack for winter use. For the size, the dome and the cabin tents which are typically large are the best options for stove jack installation.

Why the Dome Tent with Stove Jack Are Best for All Season Camping

Dome tents are ideal types that can withstand strong winds and in preventing snow buildup on the roof and therefore are good choices for camping in cold conditions . The dome tent has a hemispherical shape that helps heat loss. Many accidents happened in the past because the tents used were not designed for snow slide but rather the roof caught it and the tent collapsed.

The dome-shaped tents also have lighter structures than other tent types and are more compact but still space-efficient. They are easy to carry and quick to set up. If your friends plan to camp in areas where it gets very cold like in Canada, Northern Europe, or New Zealand, dome-shaped tents especially if it is a canvas tent with stove jack can be the ideal type to bring along.

Other than the dome-shaped with stove jack, the cabin tents are the next best for winter camping. However, better choose them only for areas with mild snowfall and with constant weather patterns. These types of tents sort of look like log cabins that have four walls and roofs that are slanted to allow snow to slide off. Nevertheless, because it is heavier and bigger compared to the dome-shaped tent, it would be difficult to carry it up in the mountain but excellent to put up on camping sites and be with friends or family.

Why Do We Need A Lightweight Tent With Stove Jack?

A heavy-duty canvas tent with stove jack can be an ideal tent to house several people in one place securely. But it does not mean that only the large and canvas tent types can be equipped or installed stove jacks because you can now easily find a lightweight tent with stove jack on the market that can also house 2 or 4 people at most. For one, there are the pup canvas tents that can accommodate a couple to 3 people. There are also small cabin-type canvas tents that are designed for 4 people. These can be carried up the mountains and are best for a large group of individuals who want to sleep in small groups.

Not only that, other tents as long as they can breathe and you can make them fire-resistant. These can also be used for camping and have a stove jack installed. And a polycotton lightweight tent can be equipped with a stove jack while pre-installed polycotton tents with stove jacks are also available.

Polycotton tents can breathe, are durable, and lighter than pure canvas tents. But as a warning, avoid using tent stoves in pure nylon and polyester tents because once high heat builds up inside the tent, the safety of the people inside it can get compromised as these fabrics can easily catch fire.

Safety Tips When Using Canvas Tents With Stove Jack

We don’t want to leave you without sharing with you some safety tips when using a tent stove with a stove jack. So remember these:

When pitching your tent in a field, mountains, or  campsite, always orientate your tent’s stove jack towards the breeze or turn the back of the tent away from the direction of the wind. This is to blow away the sparks or embers from your tent and avoid damaging your tent.

Consider using a tarp fly if you want to double your chances to protect the roof of your tent from sparks. Or, you can spray your tent with a fire-retardant spray product inside and outside to ensure any spark that lands won’t burn through the canvas.

Under your  tent stove, use a fire mat under it so that the floor area will be protected from getting burnt. Remember that fire stoves can get extremely hot, especially on the bottom.

Avoid using a gas stove or a griller inside your tent because these can release carbon monoxide which is highly toxic.
